What's New in Argo Books

New Features

• Track assets: Record vehicles, equipment, furniture, buildings and land as fixed assets, straight from an expense or on the new Assets page. Argo Books works out their depreciation for you, and your Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement show it, along with a new Asset Register report. When you sell an asset, the gain or loss is worked out too.
• Five new report templates: Sales by Customer, Expenses by Supplier, Payroll Summary, Rentals and Customer Statement. A customer statement shows what a customer owes today, or their account's activity between two dates. Sales by Customer can also show all of one customer's sales.
• Edit many at once: Select rows, a range with Shift, or everything a filter shows, then set the product, supplier or customer of expenses and sales, move products to another category, or delete them.
• Add and remove report pages where you want them: Right-click a page in the report designer to add a new page right after it, or delete it.

Enhancements

• Clearer report charts: Easier-to-read numbers, dates and names, a legend when a chart shows two datasets, and three tax charts ready to add to any report.
• A smoother report designer: A click no longer nudges what you clicked, adding a page takes you straight to it, and Argo Books reminds you to save a report design before you close or switch company.
• Easier dashboard layout: Widgets move between rows smoother, and a new widget fills the empty spot in its row.
• Search that tells you when nothing matches: A table search with no results says so, with a button to clear it.
• More disk space: Update files from earlier versions are cleaned up automatically.
• A tidier Mac menu bar: The menu bar shows the app's name, and the File menu sits in it with Open Company and Close Company.

• Charts in a report, for a business with only expenses display columns properly.

New Features

• Work without reaching for the mouse: Tab and Shift+Tab take you through everything on a page, the arrow keys move through menus and lists, Enter chooses, and Escape closes.
• Import your bank's download file: The OFX, QFX and QBO files most banks offer for Quicken and QuickBooks now import as bank statements.
• Photograph a paper bank statement: Import a photo or scan of a paper bank statement, in JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or TIFF, and Argo Books reads its transactions just as it does a PDF statement.
• Scan receipts straight from your office scanner: Receipts saved as TIFF files are accepted, and a scan of several pages stays together as one receipt.
• More spreadsheets welcome: Import LibreOffice and Google Sheets files (.ods), Excel files with macros (.xlsm), tab-separated text files, and the .xls files many banks make with "Export to Excel".
• Start your Balance Sheet from your real bank balance: Enter what's in your business bank account when you create a company, or any time in Edit Company, and the Balance Sheet's cash starts from it instead of from zero.
• Skip the import tips you already know: The tips shown before an import's file picker have a "Don't show again" box, remembered for every company.

Enhancements

• Updates in one click: From the next update after this one, click Update and Argo Books downloads the new version, restarts and reopens right where you were. On Windows, those updates no longer ask for administrator permission.
• A simpler bank statement import: Each line is sorted into an expense or revenue from the sign of its amount, money out shows in red and money in shows in green, and a Category column sits beside Product.
• Accents come through: CSV files saved in an older Windows format keep their accented letters, curly quotes and euro signs.
• Statements with a header block: A CSV statement with your account details above the column names is read correctly, whatever separator it uses.
• WebP images in reports: The report designer accepts WebP pictures.

Fixes

• Charts on the Dashboard and Analytics pages draw every time on slower computers.
• Saving a company file kept on your desktop leaves its icon where you put it.

New Features

• See where your customers are, down to the city: The charts that group customers and suppliers by place can now group by state or province and by city, not just by country. The choice is on the Analytics page, in a dashboard chart's settings and beside a chart in the report builder, and each one remembers what you picked.
• Search the charts you can add: The Charts tab of the 'Add widget' window has a search box.
• Save any invoice as a PDF: There is a Download PDF button while you are writing an invoice and on every invoice you have already sent, so you can keep a copy or send it yourself.
• Say what you sell it by: An invoice prints the product's unit beside the quantity, so a line reads 2.5 kg rather than a bare number. Any product can state a unit now, not only the ones you count stock for, and hours and days have been added to the list.
• Attach several documents at once: An expense or revenue record can hold more than one receipt or document.
• Use your own reference numbers: An expense or revenue record can carry the number your business already uses for it. Change it on the record and everything linked to it comes along, including its payments, receipt, returns and any matched bank line.

Enhancements

• Your dashboard arrangement stays during theme changes: Changes you are making to the layout are kept when the computers theme switches, and Argo Books asks whether to save them before anything else opens over the page.
• Tidier dashboard editing: A widget you are arranging shows one clear outline, every entry in the Add widget window has an icon, and pie chart legends have more room for longer names.
• Everything you enter counts as a change: Attaching a receipt, typing a new supplier or customer, changing an invoice's template, and more, all mean the form asks if you want to save before it closes.
• Bank statements import more smoothly: Exchange rates are collected up front, behind the same progress bar the spreadsheet import shows, so every row comes in right away. A supplier or customer typed on one line is then offered on all the others.
• Easier on the eye: The smallest text in Argo Books is larger. Hints and notes are a more comfortable size.
• More of Argo Books in your language: more text now translates, in all 54 languages.
• A duplicate tells you what it came from: Duplicating an expense, a revenue record or an invoice opens with a title naming the record it was copied from.
• A quicker save: Saving an expense or revenue record no longer briefly shows a waiting screen in most cases.
• Write invoices without setting up card payments: Taking payment online is optional, so Create Invoice is ready straight away. Write one, save it as a draft and download it, and connect Stripe or Square later if you ever want customers to pay by card.
• Search finds what is in your notes: A reference or tracking number written in the notes on an expense or revenue record now comes up in the search.
• Invoices are easier to read: The text on every invoice template is darker, which shows on a dim screen and on paper.
• A clearer invoice form: Saving a draft says when a customer or product name is not one of yours, rather than leaving the box empty. When an invoice would go out with no address, phone or email on it, Argo Books points that out with a link to fill them in.
• Undo a draft invoice: Creating a draft invoice and deleting an invoice can both be undone. Undoing a delete brings the invoice back along with the income entry it made and any rentals booked against it.
• Hide the company details reminder: If you would rather leave your address, phone or email off your invoices, the reminder can be dismissed and stays dismissed for that company.
• Discounts are checked as you type: If a discount comes to more than the items on an expense or revenue record, Argo Books tells you while you are entering it, and a total below zero shows in red.
• A smaller download: Argo Books is about 10 MB smaller, so it downloads and updates a little faster.

Fixes

• An amount sitting exactly halfway between two cents always rounds up now. For example, 13% tax on $48.50 comes to $6.305, which reads as $6.31 instead of $6.30.
• A quantity ending in a zero on the invoice keeps it, so one entered as 2.50 prints as 2.50 rather than 2.5.
• The title of a widget's settings panel renders in the light theme.
• Switching a bank statement row between expense and revenue keeps the right supplier or customer with it.
• The window opens at a size your screen can give it, whatever screen you last used.
• Taking back a return or a write-off keeps the reason and note you gave in the version history.
• The "Back Online" notice appears only when the connection actually dropped.
• A stock transfer is recorded as completed, since the stock has already moved by the time you enter it.
• A line item's amount and its remove button stay lined up with the boxes beside them when a message appears on that line.

New Features

• Automatic backups: Argo Books can keep dated copies of your company, after every save, once a day or once a week, and before an import. Choose how many to keep and where they go.
• Bring your books over from QuickBooks: A new screen tells you exactly which reports to export from QuickBooks Online or Desktop, then takes them all at once, including the zip file QuickBooks gives you. Drop them onto the screen or browse for them.
• Know which file you need first: Imports now tell you what to download and where to find it before opening the file picker, so you aren't guessing at a file browser.

Enhancements

• Dates read the way your computer writes them: A spreadsheet full of dates like 03/04 is read in your own country's order.
• More dependable saving: Cleanup tools like CCleaner can empty the temporary folder Argo Books works in while your company is still open. Argo Books now rebuilds what it needs as it saves.
• Payroll says who it's for: The Employees and Pay Runs screens now clearly state that payroll is for Canadian businesses only, so you know who it's for.

Fixes

• Refunds cover more cases: a full refund goes through, tax can be refunded on its own, and a part refund on a revenue record returns the tax on just those items.
• Stock stays right when you edit a revenue record made through an invoice.
• Invoices brought in unpaid record their revenue, and each repeat of a recurring invoice records its own.
• Undoing a quote conversion keeps an invoice you've already sent.
• Undoing a bank match gives the other lines their suggestions back, and Stripe payouts are left out of matching.
• Exporting a PDF receipt saves the file you attached, rather than a picture of its first page.
• Importing a PDF bank statement works on the free plan, and a statement the reader can't make sense of says so plainly.

New Features

• See when a list is filtered: While a filter is on, the Filter button shows how many are applied, with a button to clear them. If the filters hide every row, the list tells you.
• Bank statements in any layout: Bank statements saved as a CSV or Excel file now import even when the column headings aren't in English.
• Duplicate in one click: Copy an expense, a revenue record or an invoice. A new one opens already filled in and dated today, so you only change what's different.

Enhancements

• Opens faster: Argo Books gets to its main window noticeably sooner after you open it, and Premium users no longer see a brief pause once it appears.
• Keep working while it saves: Saving happens in the background, so Argo Books no longer pauses while your company saves.
• Fits smaller windows: Argo Books adjusts better when you make the window smaller. Tables scroll sideways instead of squeezing their columns, the sidebar tucks itself away, and windows, charts and labels resize to fit better.
• Your language from the first screen: If you use Argo Books in another language, it shows in that language immediately.
• Remembers your window: Argo Books reopens at the size and position you left it.
• Your stock valued the same everywhere: Inventory value and cost of goods now agree on the dashboard, the Locations page and your reports.
• Clearer tax figures: Tax counts only the revenue you've been paid for and takes refunded tax off, so it matches your Tax Summary and Balance Sheet. Tax by category and by product is shared across every line of a revenue record.
• Top Customers follows your date range: The dashboard widget shows the period you've picked, like every other widget.
• Import previews in your currency: Before bringing in payments from Stripe or the Argo Books API, the total is shown in your company's currency.
• Security deposits: A deposit reads "Refund pending" until the card refund clears. When there's no online payment to refund, Argo Books tells you to return the deposit by hand.
• Payroll filing says what it needs: Filing your T4s or producing a Record of Employment now marks the fields still to be filled in, rather than leaving the button greyed out while you work out which one it meant.

Fixes

• Importing a spreadsheet keeps unpaid revenue records unpaid.
• Only invoices that are past due with money still owed count as overdue. Drafts and cancelled invoices never do.
• A rental billed through an invoice shows as paid once that invoice is paid, and returning a rental that was already paid keeps it paid.
• Returning a rental can't be undone, because a deposit sent back through Stripe or Square can't be taken back.
• Online refunds can include the invoice's shipping.
• Marking an expense or revenue record as returned stores what was actually paid for the items.

New Features

• Quotes: Price up work before you invoice it. Quotes have their own page and use the same templates as your invoices. Email one and your customer gets a link where they can accept or decline it, with room for a note. Their answer comes back into the app, and an accepted quote becomes a draft invoice in one click.
• Send your accountant the year in one go: The main financial statements as PDFs, every transaction as a spreadsheet, and the receipts. Save it all as a zip or email it straight to them. It's in the File menu and on the Reports page.
• 55 currencies instead of 29: Sri Lanka, Singapore, the UAE, Mexico, Nigeria, New Zealand, South Africa and more.
• Update easier: Opening a company saved by a newer version now offers an 'Update Now' button, and reopens that file once the update is done.

Enhancements

• Your company logo looks the same everywhere: The welcome screen, the sidebar, the File menu and the switcher all show the same tile, and a company without a logo gets two initials the way customers and suppliers already do.
• A clearer 'Switch Company' panel: Better organised and easier to find your way around.
• More keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y for undo and redo, Ctrl+F to jump into the page's search box, and Ctrl+N to add a new item on whichever page you are on.
• Sorting on more pages: Receipts, Returns and Lost & Damaged sort by any column, the same as every other list.

Fixes

• Changing your logo leaves sent documents alone: A new logo applies to new and unsent invoices and quotes. Anything you have already sent keeps the logo your customer received.
• A product made with "create one" button in the Add Item form on the Stock Levels page is stock-tracked straight away, so it appears in the list and gets selected.
• Closing an invoice you have not edited no longer asks whether to discard changes.
• Closing the app while the app is already closing is ignored.
• The File menu always shows its labels.

New Features

• Your stock counts as stock, not spending: Buying stock for a product you track adds to your inventory, and its cost comes off your profit on the day it sells. A month where you restocked heavily no longer looks like a loss, and your Income Statement now shows Cost of Goods Sold and Gross Profit.
• Book rentals ahead: A rental that starts later is saved as a reservation and leaves the units on your shelf until you check it out. The same units can't be promised twice for dates that overlap, and you can cancel a reservation in one click.
• Give back as much of a deposit as you choose: When a rental comes back, enter how much of the security deposit to return. Whatever you keep is recorded as revenue. If the customer paid the rental invoice online, the refund opens with that amount already filled in, ready to send back through Stripe or Square.
• Charge for late returns and damage: Add an extra charge on the return, with a note saying what it is for, and it is added to what the rental comes to.
• Stock in more than one place: Move stock between a shop and a storage unit right from Stock Levels page, and choose the location on an expense or revenue record when a product is stocked in more than one.
• Stock by weight and volume: Choose the unit a product is stocked in, such as kilograms, litres or boxes, and keep part units like 2.5 kg.
• Add a category, customer or supplier as you type: Type a name that isn't on the list yet and Argo Books creates it when you save, so you don't have to stop and set it up first.
• Provinces, states and counties from a list: Thirteen countries now pick their region from a list, each with its flag, and the label matches the country.

Enhancements

• Search by ID: Typing 20 finds PRD-020, on the products, customers and suppliers pages.
• Know about the payment portal up front: Creating an invoice from the rentals page tells you right away when the payment portal isn't set up yet, instead of at the moment you try to send.

Fixes

• Editing or deleting an expense or revenue record returns exactly the stock it moved.
• Revenue and expenses brought in from Stripe or the Argo Books API now move stock too.

New Features

• Argo Books for Mac: Download Argo Books on any Mac, Apple silicon or Intel. With Premium, you can open your company file with Touch ID.
• Add items as you go: When you record an expense or revenue, type a new item or category right on the line and Argo Books creates it when you save. No more stopping to set up products first.
• Export a Record of Employment: Create the ROE file itself, ready to upload to Service Canada.

• Recurring expenses and revenue Set up rent, subscriptions, insurance or a monthly retainer once and Argo Books enters it for you every time it comes round. You stay in charge: each entry arrives marked for review, and you can skip a single month, pause a schedule, or stop it altogether.
• Photos straight from your iPhone: Receipt photos taken on an iPhone (HEIC format) now work exactly like any other picture, with no converting or exporting first.
• Open a company by double-clicking it: Double-click an Argo Books file and it opens in the app, the way you would expect.

Enhancements

• A smaller download: The installer is about 20 MB smaller, and takes up 100 MB less on your computer. It also makes setting up Argo Books quicker.
• Switching currency is much faster: Changing the currency you work in is faster, even on a slower connection.
• Move a receipt to the other side of the books: Filed a receipt as an expense when it was really revenue? Switch it without starting again.
• Pay stubs and receipts open without a connection: Opening a PDF inside Argo Books no longer needs the internet.
• A smoother payment portal email: Setting and changing the email address for your payment portal is quicker and smoother. And if you used an email for a payment portal in another company, you can use it in a new one: confirm it once and it moves across.
• "Email me when a customer pays" has moved: It now sits on the Payment Portal tab in Settings, beside the other emails sent on your behalf, rather than under Notifications.
• Easier menus: Click anywhere on a section heading in the sidebar to open or close it, instead of aiming for the small arrow.
• Finding your way out of the sample company: The demo company now makes it clear you are looking at example figures, and suggests creating your own company.

New Features

• Connect other apps to your books: Other software can now send customers, suppliers, invoices and expenses straight into Argo Books. Nothing reaches your books until you have seen it: everything arrives as a list of suggestions you look over and accept, and a single undo reverses a whole import if you change your mind. Argo Books matches customers and suppliers you already have, so the same person does not turn up twice. Switch it on under Settings, Integrations, where you can give each app its own key and take it back whenever you like.
• Full screen with F11: Press F11 to fill the whole screen with Argo Books and put everything else out of sight. F11 or Escape brings the window back.

Enhancements

• See what a sync is doing: A sync now tells you what it's working on while it runs, instead of leaving you watching a spinner.
• Charts open the way most people want them: Charts now start in the area style rather than the bar style.

New Features

• Payroll for Canadian businesses: Pay your staff without a separate payroll service. Argo Books works out CPP, EI and income tax using the CRA's own figures, for every province and territory, then produces pay stubs for your employees. At year end it prepares your T4 slips and the file the CRA needs, plus RL-1 slips if you have Quebec staff. When someone leaves, it gathers the figures for their Record of Employment.
• Automatic payment reminders: Argo Books can now chase overdue invoices for you, emailing the customer a payment link 3, 7 and 14 days after the due date and stopping as soon as they pay. The reminders are sent by our servers, so they keep going even when Argo Books is closed. Turn it on in the Payment Portal settings; only invoices that fall due after you switch it on are chased.
• Know the moment you get paid: Choose to be emailed whenever a customer pays an invoice online, so you find out without having the app open.
• Send an invoice again: Resend any invoice straight from the invoice list, for the customer who says it never arrived.

Enhancements

• Payments live on the invoice: Record a cash or cheque payment on the invoice it belongs to, and edit or remove it from the same place. No more hopping to a separate page and picking the invoice back out of a list.
• A menu that follows the money: The sidebar is now split into Expenses and Revenue, so suppliers sit alongside what you buy and customers alongside what you sell.
• Spreadsheet exports carry more: Every row now names the supplier or customer name instead of only showing an ID. Invoices bring their line items with them, amounts carry their quantity and currency, and there are new sheets for your employees and your pay runs.
• Loading screen for exports A loading screen now appears while a spreadsheet is being exported, instead of freezing.

Fixes

• Timestamps show the local time Some timestamps were showing UTC instead of the local time.
• Invoices show partial payments If an invoice was published on the payment portal, then marked as partially payed, the invoice now updates and shows the new amount.
• Rendering issue Fixed a rendering issue that could sometimes appear when opening a search box during the tutorial.
• The usual round of polish and performance work across the app.

New Features

• Password recovery: If you forget the password to a company file, our support team can now unlock it for you. Until now a forgotten password meant the file stayed closed for good. Your password itself is still private and cannot be read by anyone, including us.
• Stripe integration: Connect your Stripe account and bring your payments straight into Argo Books. Sales, tax, discounts, processing fees, and refunds all come across. Argo Books also remembers your Stripe payouts, so when you later import your bank statement it skips the matching deposit instead of counting that income twice.

Enhancements

• Much faster startup: Argo Books opens around 40% faster on Windows, and a loading screen now appears right away so you can see it starting.
• Setup starts with a receipt scan: The getting-started guide now begins by scanning a sample receipt, so you can see what Argo Books does within seconds of opening it for the first time.

• Redesigned invoice editor: Build invoices right on the invoice itself, so what you see on screen is exactly what your customer receives. Click any part of the invoice to edit line items, dates, or notes, and pick products and services from a dropdown as you type. No more filling out a separate form and hoping the layout looks right.
• Recurring invoices: Set any invoice to repeat on a schedule you choose. Perfect for subscriptions, rent, and any regular income.
