The schedule can be weekly, every two weeks, monthly, quarterly, or annual. The amount is usually fixed, like a monthly retainer or a flat cleaning fee, but it can also vary a little if the work has small extras each cycle.

The defining feature is the repeat. The client agreed to ongoing work, the price was set in advance, and the invoice arrives on the same rhythm each cycle. A monthly office cleaning bill of $250, sent on the first of every month, is a recurring invoice. A one-time deep clean of an apartment before move-in isn't, even if the cleaner has billed the same client before.

You look at the lines, add or remove anything that changed (an extra tutoring session, a one-off cleaning of the conference room, a price-change month), and then send it. This works for engagements where the price is mostly stable but small extras come up. The benefit is that you catch changes before the client does. A simple rule of thumb. If you bill the exact same amount every cycle and have for at least three cycles in a row, auto-send is fine. What to put in a recurring invoice's terms

Recurring invoices need a Terms section that does more work than a one-off invoice. Three clauses are worth having, in plain language, on every cycle.

Cancellation notice. Thirty days is the most common, and it's enough that you aren't left empty-handed on the first of next month if the client decides to end the arrangement on the 30th. Word it as the client's right, not as a trap: "Either party may cancel this arrangement with 30 days written notice. The final invoice will cover work performed up to and including the cancellation date." Most clients will respect the notice if it's visible from the start. The few who won't respect it wouldn't have respected a 60-day notice either, so don't over-engineer this.

Price-change notice. Sixty days is a fair default for raising a recurring rate. That gives the client two full cycles to either accept the new price or move on, which protects the relationship even if they choose to leave. Word it the same way: "The fee may be adjusted with 60 days written notice. The new rate takes effect on the next regular invoice issued after that period." Then actually send the notice in writing, not buried in a P.S., when the time comes.

Late-fee policy that doesn't auto-fire on day one. A late fee that hits the day after the due date will end a long-term relationship over $15. A grace period of 10 days is normal, and you can word it so the fee is your right to charge, not your default behavior: "Invoices unpaid more than 10 days after the due date may be subject to a late fee of 1.5% per month on the outstanding balance." Two more small things that help. Spell out exactly what the recurring price covers, so a request for extra work outside the scope is clearly an extra. And state in plain language that the invoice is for the upcoming period or the just-finished period, so the client isn't confused about what month they're paying for. Retainers are usually billed in advance, cleaning is usually billed in arrears, and writing it on the invoice ends the question.
